To be effective in today's business climate, it is important that HR professionals understand how government works, how legislation impacts the profession, and how HR professionals can influence public policy.  The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has launched an initiative to create a nationwide member advocacy network of HR Advocates collectively known as the Advocacy Team, or A-Team, to fully engage its members in the public policy process.

On Wednesday, July 17, 2013, SHRM and GVHRA are pleased to host an A-Team session with presenters Chartrane Birbal, Senior Associate of Member Advocacy in SHRM’s Government Affairs team and Jim Nys, Montana State SHRM Council Legislative Director and Owner of Personnel Plus Consulting.

    11:15am - Registration
    11:30am - Lunch
    Noon - 2:30pm - Presentations

Ms. Birbal will discuss how the SHRM Advocacy Team has been developed by SHRM Government Affairs as a way to assist HR Advocates — professionals like you — in making their voices heard on public policy issues impacting the workplace. It’s time that policymakers — both in Washington and in state capitals across the country — understand the role HR plays in today’s workplace. The SHRM Advocacy Team is a crucial component of SHRM’s advocacy efforts, and works with you to advance the interests of the HR profession at both the federal and state levels. As a member of the SHRM Advocacy Team, you can join the ranks of other HR Advocates committed to moving the HR profession forward, and be the voice of our profession.

Mr. Nys will address recent state and local issues as well as federal regulatory and court decisions that impact the day to day practice of the HR profession. More specifically, he will address recent Montana Legislative actions, new regulations by the US Department of Labor regarding FMLA and new rules from OFCCP., Important court decisions from the US Supreme Court, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the Montana Supreme Court will also be involved.  Finally, Nys will discuss how to advocate at the state and local level in Montana.

This event has been approved for three (3) hours of STRATEGIC recertification credits by the HR Certification Institute.  For more information about the SHRM Advocacy Team, please click HERE.
